Luke 12 Be Ready

Scripture:  Luke 12:40  You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Observation:  Staying in the Word and prayer is essential because time is short and He could be coming any time. No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.  Matthew 24:36   I want to be ready when He comes!

Application:  When I get to heaven, I long to hear the words "Well done my good and faithful servant!"  Matthew 25:21  I want to make sure I'm ready for that day.  I need to allow Jesus to mold me into the woman He wants me to be and make sure He always takes first place in my life.

Prayer:  My Lord,  Thank you that you have promised me a place with you in eternity someday.  I pray that I will be ready for the day you come to take us there.  Please show me the areas you want me to grow in and help me to become the servant you want me to be. Help me to be bold when it comes to talking to others who don't know you so they can share in the hope that I have.  Come quickly, Lord Jesus!

Amen

Luke 11 A House United

Scripture:  Luke 11:17  Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them:  "Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall.

Observation:  Many times I view our family as "me against them".  I don't mean to, it just slowly evolves. Then it becomes a game I can't win. I'm lonely and they're defensive.  I don't want to be a house divided.

Application:  I need to try to find more ways to involve my kids, enjoy time together, laugh and play with them and not get bogged down and frustrated with all my to-do lists not getting done.  A long time from now, I won't remember all the lists I scratched off but I will remember all the memories we made in the process. I want to make sure they're good ones.

Prayer:  Dear Lord,  Please forgive me for allowing my house to be divided.  I don't want it to be a "me against them" game.  I want us to be united in You. Show me how to create a more unified environment with more joy so that we can make memories that will last. Help me to not get so caught up in my lists that I miss the important stuff.   Thank you that your mercies are new each morning.  Please bless this family, Lord.

Luke 10 Choose What is Better

Scripture:  Luke 10:41-42  "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed.  Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."

Observation:  I am a Martha through and through.  I worry about many things and forget to focus on what really matters.  At the time, all those things I'm concerned with seem important but in the end I've lost perspective and "sweated the small stuff".  If I would only choose the better, I have the promise that it won't be taken away from me. In other words, I won't regret it.

Application:  Whether it's having people over, trying to keep up with the daily demands of life or just watching my daughter make a mess in the kitchen while she makes us cookies, I need to remember not to worry about the small stuff.  When people come over, I need to focus on loving them, listening to them and blessing them with friendship.  When my daughter is making a mess in my eyes, she's really trying to use the creativity that God gave her and bless her family.  I need to pray that God will help me see the more important things that are happening and that I won't focus on the silly little details that I get all caught up in.

Prayer:  Dear Lord,   Please help me to focus more on the big picture.  I tend to worry about all the little details when you would rather that I focus on loving you and my neighbor.  Show me how to let go of all my concerns and let you guide me. Forgive me for missing the point so many times.  I don't want to look back and have regrets about not choosing what was better.

Amen

Luke 8 Nothing Is Secret

Scripture:  Luke 8:17  For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.

Observation:  It's scary to think that all those things we think were done in secret will be revealed. It truly makes me ponder the past to try to remember anything I have done that I haven't ever told anyone.  Whatever it may be, Jesus saw and He knows.   It must be hard for Him to watch us doing those things we think we are doing secretly.

Recently, I was lied to. It broke my heart to know that this person I trusted would look me in the eye and lie to me.  Even harder, I knew I was being lied to but I was wishing that I didn't. It must break His heart to watch us sin "in secret".

Application:  I need to remember that every moment of every day, Jesus sees me and what I'm doing.  Nothing is secret from Him.  I can't hide any sin or struggle from Him.  He loves me and wants to forgive me and heal me so that I can do the work He put me on this earth to do.

Prayer:  Dear Lord,  Please forgive me for the times that I think I'm "getting away" with something.  I can never get away with anything with you.  You see it all and I'm sorry that at times I must break your heart with my thoughts and actions.  Please help me to "take every thought captive" and make sure that wherever I am and whatever I'm doing that I'm honoring You.  Thank you for not allowing me to get away with anything and always holding me accountable.
I want to be pleasing in your sight, always.

Amen

Luke 7 A God of Compassion

Scripture:  Luke 7:13  When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, "Don't cry."

Observation:  It is so comforting to me that our Lord is so compassionate.  He truly feels our pain and hurts with us.  I love knowing that His heart goes out to me when I'm struggling and He sees me when I cry.

Application:  When I am feeling utterly alone and hopeless, I need to remember that He said in Joshua 1:5 "I will never leave you nor forsake you".  He sees me when I cry and is waiting to comfort me.  He understands my pain and hurts when I hurt.  He is preparing a place for me where there are no tears or pain to live forever with Him (John 14:2)

Prayer:  Dear Lord,  Thank you for being such a compassionate and loving God.  I love knowing that when I cry, you are right there ready to comfort me and lead me on.  Please help me to allow you to comfort me.  Help me to feel your presence in those moments and remember your words of compassion and hope so that I can then get up and move on.  Thank you for the power of your love.  I pray that I can show that same compassion to others.  I love you my Lord.

Luke 6 Students Follow In Their Teacher's Footsteps

Scripture:  Luke 6:40  The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.

Observation:  The truth is that we unknowingly become like our teachers. They are in authority over us and we follow their lead.  This seems especially true when it comes to homeschooling.  I am with my children all day, every day and influence them greatly.  I need to make sure that I'm fully trained by my Teacher so that I will be like Him and teach my children accordingly. I want my children to see Jesus through me!

Application:  I know this has been repeated quite often but reading the bible and having a daily quiet time will ensure that I'm continuing my training.  I need to make sure that Jesus is my teacher and not the multitude of outside influences such as friends, television, facebook, etc.

Prayer:  Dear Lord,  Please help me to be consistent in my daily quiet time.  Help me to place you first above all else so that you are my teacher.  I want those around me to see you through me.  Please help me to follow in your footsteps so that my children will do the same.  Forgive me for allowing other things to guide and teach me when I should be focusing on the wisest teacher there is.  Thank you for daily meeting me for training!

Amen

Luke 5 God's Grace

Scripture:  Luke 5:8  When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!"

Observation:  If we could really grasp the amazing grace that Jesus gives us or the massive power He has, we would probably understand completely where Peter was coming from!  How small he must have felt when his eyes were opened and he caught a glimpse of who Jesus really was.

Application:  I never want to lose sight of the greatness of Jesus. I can easily get caught up in the temporary things of this world and forget all that Jesus did for me on the cross and daily does for me in the forgiveness of my sins and His great love for me.  When I focus on it, sometimes it completely overwhelms me to think that He would do all of that for me.  I can't grasp it.  But I never want to stop trying.

Prayer:  Dear Lord,  Thank you never quite seems to cover all that you have done for me.  You gave your very life for me so that someday I could come spend eternity with you.  Daily you forgive my faults and errors, loving me more than I can ever imagine.  The greatness of your grace and mercy and love astounds me and confounds me.  I give you my thanks and my very life to use for your will and glory.  I love you my Lord and Savior, my King of Kings and Lord of Lords and I can't wait to spend eternity with you.

Luke 4 Never Let Your Guard Down

Scripture:  Luke 4:13  When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.

Observation:  1 Peter 5:8 says "Be alert and of sober mind.  Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."

This verse immediately came to mind after reading Luke 4:13.  The devil is always looking for "an opportune time".  We need to always be alert and on our guard.  When the devil left Jesus, it was only to wait for that next open opportunity to try again.  He will never stop looking for that moment that you let your guard down.

Application:  There are several ways that I can be on my guard.  I need to be reading the bible and seeking that intimate relationship with Jesus daily.  I need to constantly be working on that relationship as I would an earthly one but with even more intense focus.  I need to be memorizing scripture so that when the father of lies starts whispering his nonsense to me, I can combat it with the truth.  I want to be so in tune with my father that I can draw on His strength and love when I'm in the midst of a battle.

Prayer:  Dear Lord,   I know that there will be times that Satan will try to use my weaknesses to draw me away from you. He will stop at nothing to make me believe his lies. Please grant me strength in those moments to call upon the truth of who I am in Christ.  Help me to stand up to temptations.  No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

Thank you for loving me and wanting to have an intimate relationship with me. Thank you that you are Truth and I can always run to you as my strong tower.  Help me to never let my guard down!  I love you my Lord,

Amen

Luke 3 Produce Good Fruit

Scripture:  Luke 3:9  The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

Observation:  We will be known by our fruit.  Talking the talk doesn't cut it, we need to walk the walk. Time is short and we need to make the most of the moments we have to show those around us who Jesus is through our words and deeds.

Application:  I need to make sure that my actions match my words.  I don't want to be a hypocrite!  I want people to know from my actions and words where my devotion lies.
"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." Colossians 3:17

Prayer:  Dear Lord,  Thank you for allowing us this time now on earth to try to tell as many people as possible about you and your love so that they can live in eternity with you.  Your grace always amazes me.  Please grant me more of a sense of urgency to tell others about salvation.  I pray that my words and actions will help and not hinder my witnessing to others.  Help them to see you through me.  Forgive me when I fail in this area.  I truly want to produce good fruit in your name!

Amen

Luke 2 Treasure Up

Scripture:  Luke 2:19  But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

Observation:  As I read through this part of the chapter, I was thinking how chaotic it probably was around Mary.  I mean there was this newborn baby she was caring for and shepherds all around her and I just picture her quietly standing back and gazing at the scene in front of her. It seems like she was trying to live in the moment.  She was trying to remember every detail and work through all these wondrous events that had taken place in her life. She didn't want to forget a thing and was probably still amazed at the responsibilities that God had trusted her with.

Application:  I really need to do a better job of living in the moment.  I need to stop continually working to get through the next thing.  I don't want to forget this time in my life with my children.  I read this today on Facebook quoted from A Holy Experience

But the biggest mistake I made is the one that most of us make while doing this.
I did not live in the moment enough.
This is particularly clear now that the moment is gone, captured only in photographs. There is one picture of the three of them sitting in the grass on a quilt in the shadow of the swing set on a summer day, ages 6, 4 and 1. And I wish I could remember what we ate, and what we talked about, and how they sounded, and how they looked when they slept that night.
I wish I had not been in such a hurry to get on to the next thing: dinner, bath, book, bed.

I wish I had treasured the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less.”

~Anna Quindlen

Oh how I want to change this about myself.  I want to treasure the doing!!

Prayer:  Oh my Dear Lord,  Thank you so much for speaking to me today.  Thank you for making sure that I heard what you wanted me to know before it was too late.  There are many moments that I've already forgotten or wasn't paying attention enough to ever remember in the first place.  I can't get any of that time back but I can make changes from now on.  Help me to live in the moment.  Help me to look in my children's eyes when they speak to me, to really listen and internalize their words.  Help me to show them they really matter in that moment and take the memories of those moments with me.  May I do this each moment of my day.  I really want to listen.. to You, to my husband, my children, my friends and those that really need to know they matter.  Help me to treasure the doing and not just the getting done.  May I show your love to each person that needs to feel it.  Please forgive me for getting caught up with all the "doing".

Amen

Luke 1 (Part 2) Believe

Scripture:  Luke 1:45  Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!

Observation:  I believe that this goes along with yesterday's amazement at Mary's faith.  When we believe in and allow God to work his will in us, He can do great and mighty things with our lives.  Our thinking is so small and limited, his perspective is big and limitless.  I want to believe that every promise of God will be fulfilled and receive His blessing!

Application:  Truly surrendering to God takes becoming intimate with Him in prayer and His Word.  The more you know Him, the more you trust Him and know that He wants to "prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future".  Mary must have been intimately seeking God to trust Him so much.

Prayer:  My Dear Lord,   Thank you for the example of Mary.  She was a humble and willing servant.  She allowed You to work your will in her life and accepted whatever future you had in mind for her and the child she had yet to meet.  She trusted you wholeheartedly.  Please help me to be humble and willing as well.  May I trust you wholeheartedly.  Thank you for coming into my life and constantly guiding me into a more intimate relationship with you.  Thank you for loving me and wanting more from my life than my small mind can comprehend.  You always want the best and I trust you.

Amen

Luke 1

Scripture:  Luke 1:38  "I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered.  "May your word to me be fulfilled."

Observation:  An angel had just visited Mary and told her astounding news and yet Mary didn't question it. She believed in her God and agreed to whatever His plan was for her life and future.  I can't imagine what was going through her mind at that moment but in the end she fought through any fears and doubts she had and allowed God's plan to unfold.

Application:  I want to have the faith that Mary had and allow God's plan for my life to unfold as He wills.  God always proves himself worthy of my trust...in the miracle of my children after years of infertility, in my marriage, my son's health after heart surgery and the list goes on. Why do I ever doubt Him?!  Today, I gave my day to Him, knowing it was packed full and chaotic.  As I was unexpectedly plunging the kitchen sink that was clogged, I questioned His plans for my day because they didn't match up with mine.  May I allow His plan to unfold even when it looks nothing like I think it should!

Prayer:  Lord,  please forgive me for ever questioning you or your plan for my life.  Your will is so much better than anything I could dream up.  Thank you for being patient with me when I become impatient with you.  Thank you for being trustworthy and please help me to have the faith I need to trust you with my life, even if it looks different than I expect.  Thank you for Mary's example of faith and Lord  "May your word to me be fulfilled".  I give you my day tomorrow and thereafter to do with as you will.

Amen

Proverbs 31

Scripture:  Proverbs 31:27  She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.

Observation:  We are coming to a crossroads in our lives and I may need to step up to the plate in ways that I haven't had to for quite some time.  My husband may be taking a lower paying job just so he can see his family.  Since our house didn't sell, we can't move to Nebraska and him living there and us here is just not conducive to being the husband and father he would like to be.  This may mean that the only way we can make ends meet is for me to find a way to make money and be more resourceful.

Application:  I have begun praying that God will show me what to do.  It would need to be flexible enough to work around homeschooling my kids and I'm not sure what that would look like.  I know that God is in control and I will trust Him to guide me to the right situation and my husband to the right job so that we can continue to raise our family together.

Prayer:  Dear Lord,  Even though this situation looks difficult, I know you have a plan.  Thank you that you know what's best for my family and that I can trust you to guide us.  Please help us to make wise decisions that will honor you and our family.  Please show me how I can help my husband so he can come home and be the husband and father that he knows you would like him to be.  Thank you for giving me such a wonderful man that cares more about our family than money or career status.

Amen
